Vtech offers highvalue with average voice quality and range Vtech VT2431 2.4 GHz 1Line Cordless Phone After using the VTech VT2431 2.4GHz cordless phone for 6 months now, I am quite happy with it. It does have some ...
The Basics
I’ve owned the VT-2431 for a year and a half. I’ve never had a single problem with it. The range is fantastic, the phone is functional, small, attractive and useful. The menu includes volume controls, a phonebook, a calls log, and settings for changing the base of the phone. As far as range, I’m guessing that I get clear reception as far as 500 feet from the base. Not bad for an inexpensive Vtech phone. Battery life is very acceptable but I’ve never done a test of how long I can talk on the phone without the battery dying. The 2.4ghz spectrum band is uncrowded for now, compared to the 900mhz band which has been clogged by so many phones for many years now.
The Base
The base is useful, complete with a speakerphone, dial pad, and other options. One of the nice features of this phone is the “Voicemail Alert” light. There is a light on the base and on each phone which blinks when you have voicemail waiting for you. I am using Verizon’s voicemail system so your system may vary.
The Handset
The handset has a “Hands Free” option which is like speakerphone, only you talk to the handset, not to the base of the phone. This is handy if you need to put the handset down and you’re also away from the base.
The Built-in Phonebook
There is a memory function built-in to the handset. You can add names and numbers to it just as you would do with a cell phone (hit 3 twice for the letter E, and so on…) I have about 40 names stored in that list. I’m not sure how many it will hold though.
The Calls Log
The calls log is great because it records the numbers of everyone you call. I am not sure if this phone can record the numbers that call you, as I don’t subscribe to the Caller ID service. I’m sure that Vtech makes a similar phone which does handle caller ID for around the same price as the VT-2431.
Other Options
The options on the handset are fairly simple. You can change the ring volume, the ring type (varies from normal phone to quite annoying electronic chiming) and connecting the handset to the ‘base’. This last option is for when you buy an additional handset. The base has a sticker on the bottom with a long code on it. You have to input the code into the phone and the phone will automatically begin working with your base. I assume this code sets the electronic band and channel on which the phone operates in the 2.4Ghz range. An interesting feature.
Battery Life
Battery life seems to be fine. If I leave the phone off of its base for a week, the battery will die. I imagine you can talk for many hours on a full charge, and fully charging the phone only takes a few hours at the most.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for a stylish phone but you don’t want to spend a lot of money, run out and get this Vtech or one of its newer similar models. I’ve been very happy using this phone (and happy not intercepting other people’s calls on my old 900mhz phone!) In my opinion, this is one of the best home/small business 2.4ghz cordless telephones on the market. You won’t be disappointed.
