What are you looking for in a cordless phone? If you are like most people, you’re interested in range, clarity, functionality, and price. Oh, and durability would be nice as well.
Every phone in our household is a cordless phone, and our brand of choice for several years has been Toshiba. Every time one of our cordless phones wears out - normally due to the rechargeable battery living out its useful existance - we head over to the local Lowes home improvement store.
Why Lowes?
Because, surprisingly, Lowes seems to have more Toshibas than anyone else in the area and they feature aggressive pricing. Aggressive as in $20 or more below the suggested "list" price by the manufacturer. Just as importantly, they carry the "do it all" Toshiba model FT8980, our current favorite of the Toshiba lineup.
We like all the bells and whistles on our phones. After all, isn’t a phone purchase a combination of what you want, and what a particular model can offer?
As for us, we wanted a black model to go with our kitchen decor. We wanted an answering machine that is digital - with no messy tapes to deal with. We wanted 40 channel auto scanning so the neighbor’s phone doesn’t interfere with ours. We wanted Caller ID so we can screen those annoying telephone marketers. And we wanted speed dial on the handset, so we can call our kids with one touch without being near the base unit.
When you want all those things, your selection becomes severely limited - regardless of the brand. Sony has a similar unit, but we’ve found that Sony’s cordless batteries decline faster than the Toshibas. Uniden also has a similarly featured combo unit, but we’ve never had any luck with Uniden in terms of phone conversation clarity. And our track record with Toshiba has been pristine, although like all cordless phones, the cycle life of any of their units is about 18 to 24 months with regular use.
Not convinced yet that this might be a good replacement phone for you?
Well, we’ve had ours about four months and the price has come down to the $89.00 range. It is an analog transmission phone (900 MHz), but its extended talk range gives us no "blind" spots anywhere in our house. We’ve even been able to take it outside and use it without any diminished transmission. After all, a cordless phone is simply a radio transmission device, and apparently Toshiba has mastered the art of transmitting voice signals relatively long distances. The range of this phone appears to be at least 50 feet from the base unit before the transmission starts being strained.
Another plus for this phone is its ability to "time stamp" messages, so when you pick up a missed message, the phone tells you the time that the message was left. Helpful when someone calls and say’s "call me right back" and you’ve been out of your house all day.
The answer machine function is superb. Incoming messages are played back loud enough to hear without straining your eardrums to catch a message, and your outgoing message can be customized by you at will. Of course, if you’d rather not use your own message, a prerecorded answer message is also provided. Although we’ve never filled the digital recording system, Toshiba says it will hold up to 15 minutes worth of messages. You can listen, store, skip and fast forward to your heart’s content - which allows for maximum flexibility when other family members will need to listen to a message.
Can you tell I’m a fan of this phone?
I could go on and on. Advanced Compander noise reduction, easy to use speed dial keys, four levels of volume control, one way page handset locator, and even a programmable digital security code. You can even leave the phone off the base unit for a couple of days without finding yourself with a dead phone. From my perspective, this consumer has named his favorite functions, and Toshiba has listened - and delivered.
So, what’s Toshiba’s secret?
Well, from our perspective it is intelligent design - coupled with functionality - in a heck of a user friendly combination. And then they add in a good price/value ratio and plenty of features that actually work to deliver consumer benefit.
The end result? You’ve got a world class phone for your home. Not too expensive, not too complicated, not too delicate.
For the average home user - just right.
