Overall the VT5831 is a very nice system that offers pretty much everything that you could wish for … we are talking here full expansion, handsfree on but the base and the handset, nice clear display, features galore with an impressive set of options. So why am I having an issue ? … well it’s because of the basic thing that you wish a phone can do perfectly and it’s sound … unfortunately, the sound when used with a headset is pretty poor and not consistent when using the handset either. I thought initially it was a setup of issue or a line issue but I tried it in two different homes which are in different cities and I am getting the same problem.

SETUP

I must say that the setup of the system is very easy and the Quick Start Guide explains it very well. Remember that you must have two outlets … one for the base and one for the handset.

LOOK AND FEEL

Overall the set looks very nice. Clean silver polish unit looks solid and professional. All buttons are clearly identified and easy to press. The handset is a bit bulky thus feels too big in your hand after a while.

FEATURES

The whole system offers you every features you can think of from a very nice Clock display on the handset to separate Setups between the Handsets and the Base which I think is a very nice option. A feature that I must point out is the Power Backup Feature which gives you the capacity to install a battery pack in the base and in case of a power failure you can still use your cordless for 2.5 hours. Great in case of emergencies. The rest of the options are easy to find and change by just going through the menu yourself or by following the User Manual which is very well laid out and easy to follow. The only thing you must remember is that your Base and you Handsets must be setup separately since each once can have their own options.

SOUND

That’s where I am very disappointed with the VT5831. When used as a regular handset, you get this sound feedback while talking which becomes very annoying after a while … actually, let’s be honest … it becomes annoying from the first second. That same issue happens when you use the headset. As I mentioned, I though it was because I was too close to the base or that it was my phone line … but I tried putting the base in a different room and also took the whole phone at my parents house and tried it and got the same problem. On the other hand, the Handsfree works great from both the handset and the base … the person on the other end hears you very well and you can hear them great also.

BOTTOM LINE

I wish I could recommend the unit but because of the sound issue I am very hesitant. I must give it a good rating because of what it offers but you may look at other models.
