Too much money for this phone Toshiba SG 1000 2.4 GHz Cordless Phone Well I was looking for a phone about the time the 2.4Ghz technology was coming around. I finally purchased the Tos...

Gone are the days of crackling cordless phones. After 900 MHz, people refused to accept poor sound quality just to have the ability to roam. The SG1000KB is no exception. It sounds very much like a corded phone. There is little line noise and it is static free. The speaker seems a little muffled at times, but not significantly. As a corded phone replacement it does a fine job. The real question is why this phone over the rest?

Three factors make this phone stand out: 1) Range 2) Batteries/Battery life 3) Cost.

The SG1000KB is a 2.4 GHz bidirectional phone that uses digital spread technology. Unlike similar phones, such as those of the a line, both the phone and the base station transmit at 2.4 GHz. This yields increased range. The usable range of the phone seems to be between 500 and 800 feet from the base station. Certainly enough for most houses. At longer distances, the phone can still connect with the base station, however some of the signal is lost and it is difficult to carry on a conversation. Spread technology makes it more difficult for people to eaves drop on your phone calls since the call is carried to the base station on several different frequencies. Clearly if the base station can receive your call, so can someone else. The security is enough to keep someone with a scanner out…not someone who know what they are doing.

The phone comes with two batteries. This is a fabulous feature. The base station charges one and the handset holds the other. Running out of juice only stops the phone for a few minutes since there is always a charged replacement. Changing the battery is simple and the extra slips into the side of the base station with ease. These batteries are the longest lasting I’ve ever seen in a cordless phone. Running out of power is not problem. I kept mine off the hook for three days, while making and receiving calls normally, before it needed a charge. That was with a brand new, fully charged battery, so other’s experiences may very. Additionally, the base station can be powered by its battery. In case of power failure, your cordless still works. Kudos to the Toshiba design team.

This phone is cheap…especially compared to many 2.4 GHz/900 MHz hybrids. I bought mine for $120 and it had a $20 rebate.

Notable negatives: 10 number programming seems a little skimpy. The phone is heavier than others and seems slightly less comfortable than others. It does not have a headphone/microphone jack like the line. There is only one ring sound (that I have been able find) and the ringer volume can only be set to high or low. I don’t really care for the ring sound and am annoyed that it is not changeable.

I don’t have the option of caller ID so I can’t comment on the built in caller ID system.

One last thing: This the first cordless I’ve had where the page function is actually useful. On my other phones, the phone would only beep for 1-2 seconds after the page button was touched. Hunting for a lost phone was a two person job. On this phone, the phone beeps until the talk button is pressed…much more useful.

On the whole this is a solid phone. It works well and has a few nice features. The negatives are minor annoyances and really don’t detract from the phone’s operation. I’d buy another if I needed a new phone.
