the essential parameters i looked for in a cordless are the following:
1. clarity of sound (achieved through 2.4GHz DSS) at medium range (up to 100m in densely populated environment).
2. caller ID - essential.
3. charged spare battery in base
actually i bought a phone having all these features, but its production was stopped. it was the RadioShack ET-1119 (yes, original batteries still function after 2 years of intensive use, and sound is clear as ever). i then looked for a reasonably priced (95$ not including shipment) phone having most of ET-1119 features and ordered Toshiba SG1000BK.
this is what i have found:
1. sound quality is excellent and does not change when moving from one room to the other. outdoors, good reception is achieved up to ~150m.
2. spare battery - main advantage is that the phone never spends time charging in the cradle - what is the use in a cordless that is tied for 7-16 hours to the wall (it’s even worse than a corded phone, because picking up a call using cordless during charging period harms charging process)? Toshiba SG1000BK, sends a low volume sound (+ blinking display) indicating low battery. switching between batteries can be performed during conversation. another advantage of having a charged spare battery is the lengthening of battery life when it goes through complete discharge before fully charging it.
the only disadvantage i found in this phone is a lack of headset jack. 2.4GHz phones operate within microwave frequency band that may cause damage to living tissue. although this phone operates a low power transceiver, health hazards should be considered until the opposite is proven.
